As per one of the famous legends, Lord Krishna cursed one of his own sons with leprosy. To seek penance, Samba worshiped Lord Sun (Surya) for a period of twelve years. Finally, pleased with Samba, Surya healed him and Samba made the Sun temple as an act of gratitude. This is one of the oldest temples in India.

Being one of the oldest pilgrimage centers in India it finds mention in the ancient Puranas. Soma refers to the ‘Moon God’, thus Somnath means ‘Protector of the Moon God’. According to a legend, Som built the temple in the honor of Lord Shiva when he later cured moon’s illness, which was inflicted on him owing to his father-in-law’s curse.

It is one of the most admired ‘jyotirlings’ among the 12 existing jyotirlingas of India.

Sanchi is a village in Madhya Pradesh, which also happens to the home to several Buddhist structures built between 3rd century BC to 12th century AD. The most significant one is the Sanchi Stupa, also known as the Great Stupa. This happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built by the great emperor Asoka in the 3rd century BC.

Here Lord Rama along with his wife Sita first landed after defeating the demon Ravana. To seek penance for killing a Brahmin, Rama wanted to pray to Shiva. Hanuman was sent to Kailash to bring an idol of the God. During then, Sita made a small lingam and came to be known as Ramalingam and one brought by Hanuman is called Vishwalingam.

In a holy cave, there is the abode of Maa Vaishno Devi and is located at an altitude of 5200 ft in a mountain called Trikuta. It is present in Jammu and Kashmir, near the town of Katra.
