In the honor of Iron Man of India and India’s first Home Minister Sardar Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary, a tall memorial was unveiled on October 31st. 1. Work completed in an estimated time
In the year 2010, the project was declared but the actual work was started on October 31st, 2013. During this period Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. His ultimate aim was to construct and unveil the statue of unity 2018. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust has contributed to the construction of the statue. The raw materials for the construction have been generated by this trust since the year 2013.
2. Total iron crowdsourced was around 50 lakh kg
Loha was the campaign required for the construction of this monument. The Trust has generated iron from all over the country. Almost 50,00,000 kg iron was crowdsourced and a manual labor of 3,400 people are a part of the work for the construction of Sardar Patel’s statue.
3. Cement used: 2.25 kg crore
The weight of 56 Boeing 747 planes that is almost 2,25,00,000 kg cement is used in the construction of the statue. Since 2013 the progress of the statue of unity was well versed to be completed in 2018. Ram Vanji Sutar a sculptor and a receptor of Padma Bhushan in 2016 and Padma Shri in 1999 were responsible for the design of the statue. He is famous for designing lots of statues including Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Parliament Complex.
4. Statue of unity cost Rs 2,989 crore
In October 2013, the construction work was initiated and a rough estimate of the statue of unity cost was around Rs 3001 crore. After the bidding process was done for the construction and the maintenance of the monument, Larsen and Turbo won’t the contract for Rs 2,989 crore. By Mid-October 18, the government had set a target to complete the work and the statue was inaugurated on the iron man of India’s 143rd Birthday.
5. Tourist expectation of around 15000
Almost around 15000 tourist visit has been estimated by the government of India. From a point of view of 7km radius, a 182 m high statue can be clearly seen. There are almost 182 Assembly constituencies in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and this is the reason for its rough estimated height of 182 m.

The Statue of Liberty is half the height of this magnificent monument. The Statue of liberty is 93 meters tall and Christ the Redeemer is just 30 meters. Until the statue of unity was proposed the Statue of Liberty was the tallest memorial which was inaugurated in the year 1886.
7. Difficulties faced
It was not quite easy to build this tall monument and the toughest thing over here was developing a strong base. It was really significant to have a sturdy base to make such a tall monument. Although the base is shorter than The Liberty statue and the Christ Redeemer, it is still taller than the former. The reason behind this was Sardar’s lower outfit, dhothi. The top and the bottom ratio of the statue was considered as 16:9 which is higher than 8:14 ratio rule (followed in the construction of tall buildings).
8. Controversies against
Congress President Rahul Gandhi gave some allegation remarks that the Prime Minister is constructing this statue with Chinese Assistance. He also grieved that the statue will have a Made in China label on it. Such remarks were banished by the BJP and L&T that only the bronze cladding plates are provided by China which is 9% of the total value of the project.
